		Artistic Director Candice Christakos Email Candice Candice Christakos has been performing, teaching, and making dances for over twenty five years. She began her training at the June Taylor School of Dance in New York City studying with ballet and jazz teachers of national merit. She earned her B.A. from the University of Maryland where she was one of the original members of Maryland Dance Theatre and was first exposed to Modern Dance. Turning down a graduate scholarship to UCLA, she proceeded directly to Manhattan to study with the giants of Modern Dance including Nikolais -Louis, Merce Cunningham, Hanya Holm. In New York , Ms. Christakos was a member and guest artist with the Phyllis Lamhut Dance company, touring the U.S. under the auspices of NEA's Artist-in-Residence and Dance Touring Programs. She was soloist for Marc Franko's NOVANTIQUA and collaborated in concert with Gael Stepanek for fifteen years, choreographing and producing her own works annually. Her choreographic skill also earned her three fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. While completing her M.A. in Dance Education from Teachers College, Columbia University , she met her husband Don Prosch . At his suggestion, she pursued certification as a Movement Analyst from the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement studies. Using Laban's movement perspective, they moved to Woodstock , Vermont to established Dance Process, an inter-generational, community program committed to enhancing life through movement. Under her artistic direction, the innovative performance ensemble served as Touring Artist for the Vermont Council on the Arts. Ms. Christakos has taught in higher-education, at Drew University , University of Hartford/ Hartt School and in Massachusetts at Springfield College . The events of 9ll propelled her closer to family in Alabama where she teaches at the University of South Alabama . Throughout her dance career, she has relied upon the power, wisdom, and grace of the dancing body. She sees a bright future with Alabama Contemporary Dance, training strong, healthy dancers for an exciting repertoire of danceworks . Founder and former Executive Director Sue Simpson The Alabama State Council on the Arts 2000-2001 Artistic Fellowship winner, Sue Simpson, is the Founder of the Alabama Contemporary Dance Company. She is an executant member of the Royal Academy of Dancing and a gold medalist with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, Great Britain . Currently she serves on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Dance Council. She is an award winning dancer, teacher and choreographer and has had a professional career in England , Canada and the United States . In a career spanning over thirty years, Sue has experience in every aspect of dance and theatre. Sue was presented to members of the British Royal Family for her work with underserved youth, received the 1998-1999 J. C. Penney Golden Rule Award in the field of Arts and Culture and awarded an Artist Fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts in 2001-2001 for her contribution to enriching the cultural environment of Alabama.
