".. Alabama Contemporary Dance demonstrates the rewards of risk-taking, presenting programs that consistently invite us to open ourselves to the myriad possibilities of dance." Charlie Smoke - Mobile Arts Council

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Alabama Contemporary Dance is to strive for excellence in the art of dance and dance education; to foster emerging talent; to collaborate with established artists, and to strengthen partnerships and community outreach.

Alabama Contemporary Dance is located in the downtown arts district, taking its place across the street from the historic Saenger Theatre, around the corner from Mobile Opera, Mobile Symphony and the Larkin's Music Center and one short block from the Centre for the Living Arts.

The company has hosted numerous artists of national and international stature who help to provide a unique perspective on dance. Commissioning works from emerging talent, and collaborating with professionals, the company lays claim to one of the most diverse repertories of contemporary choreography in the southeast.

The present company includes veteran dancers, junior members, guest artists and select dancers from the University of South Alabama. Bridging the gap between amateur and professional dance careers, they provide educational programming to the Boys and Girls Clubs, G.R.O.W.T.H., Goodwill Easter Seals and 21st Century Learning Centers. In September 2002, Alabama Contemporary Dance traveled to New York , performing "A Plea for Tolerance: Lessons in Freedom" for city high schools. Next season it plans to commission "Family" from Shapiro and Smith Dance, using the zany, thought-provoking piece as the center for its 2005-06 Arts-in-Education Program and performance season.

Alabama Contemporary Dance provides a variety of school residencies designed to implement the Alabama Course of Study in Dance. The company is committed to providing quality arts-in-education programs, individually tailoring its content and methods to serve all learning populations.

Alabama Contemporary Dance is a non-profit 501©3 organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Membership is opened to all and contributions are tax deductible.
